Attendance Matters – every day
St. Joseph County cares about the well-being and future of our children. Too many of our students are missing too much school, which means that they are more likely to have difficulty learning to read by the 3rd grade, achieving in middle school, and graduating from high school.
In Indiana, the goal is for every student to be in school 94% of the time. So, missing 11 days in a school year is too much. A student who misses 11 days every year misses nearly a whole year of school by the end of 12th grade.
Each school day is a chance to add new ideas, new skills, new relationships to one’s toolbox for success.
Starting now, be Here Today, Ready for Tomorrow, and ready to secure a positive future for us all.
STUDENTS
Did you know that if you graduate from high school, you are likely to earn $10,000 more per year than if you don’t? And your best chance of graduating is being in school every day. If you have trouble getting to school for any reason, talk to someone you trust or see our resources below.
FAMILIES
Getting your child to school every day has greater impact on their academic success than their gender, race, or socioeconomic status. Showing up for commitments, like school or work, is a lifelong skill. We all want our children to succeed so reach out if you are struggling with getting your child to school.

SCHOOLS
In schools with high rates of chronic absence, all students are affected as it becomes harder for teachers to keep students engaged and learning together. The community is here to support you as you create safe and engaged learning communities where every student belongs and sees their future potential.
COMMUNITIES
Students who graduate high school are more likely to be healthier over their lifetimes and live in safer neighborhoods. Communities with high rates of high school graduation have less crime.
